CDL Pre‑Trip Inspection Procedure

Pre-Inspection Documentation

Verify CDL license class matches vehicle type being operated

Check medical card expiration date (must be valid)

Review previous DVIR and verify defects were repaired

Confirm vehicle registration and insurance are current

Check all required permits for route and cargo

Verify Hours of Service compliance before starting

Document start time of inspection in logbook

In-Cab Safety Check

Adjust seat for proper pedal reach and steering control

Check seat belt operation and adjust for secure fit

Adjust all mirrors for maximum visibility

Test horn for proper operation

Verify emergency equipment is present and functional

Check fire extinguisher charge and mounting

Ensure three reflective triangles are available

Test all interior lights and gauge illumination

Engine Start & Gauge Check

Start engine and check for unusual noises

Verify oil pressure builds within 15 seconds

Check temperature gauge rises gradually

Confirm voltmeter shows charging

Monitor air pressure gauge (if air brakes)

Look for warning lights or alarms

Test windshield wipers and washer operation

Check DEF level gauge if equipped

Air Brake System Inspection

Pump brakes to reduce air pressure below 90 PSI

Check build time to 120 PSI (under 3 minutes)

Test governor cut-out at 120-140 PSI

Perform static leak test (max 3 PSI/minute)

Apply service brakes for applied leak test (max 4 PSI/minute)

Fan brakes to test low air warning (55-75 PSI)

Continue fanning to test spring brake activation (20-45 PSI)

Check brake adjustment with proper PPE

External Walk-Around Start

Begin at driver's door, proceed counterclockwise

Check fuel cap secure and no leaks present

Inspect step condition and door operation

Verify mirror mounting and adjustment

Check left front tire pressure and condition

Inspect wheel, lug nuts, and hub oil seal

Check suspension components for damage

Verify mud flap presence and condition

Front of Vehicle Inspection

Check headlights for cracks and proper aim

Verify turn signals and parking lights work

Inspect windshield for cracks in swept area

Check wiper blade condition and arm security

Verify license plate is clean and visible

Look under vehicle for leaks or damage

Check steering components for wear

Inspect front axle and suspension

Side and Rear Inspection

Check all marker lights and reflectors

Inspect cargo area doors and latches

Verify load security and weight distribution

Check all tires for proper inflation and tread

Inspect dual tires for objects between them

Check brake hoses and chambers for leaks

Verify tail lights, brake lights, and signals work

Ensure rear license plate is clean and lit

Final Checks & Documentation

Return to cab and test service brakes

Check parking brake holds vehicle

Test trailer brake operation if applicable

Complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Report

Note any defects found during inspection

Sign DVIR with date and time

Report defects to maintenance immediately

File paperwork as required by carrier
