Truck Exterior Walkaround Inspection Checklist

Complete pre-trip exterior inspection procedure for commercial vehicles to ensure DOT compliance and safe operation.

Front of Vehicle

  • Check headlights (low and high beam) for proper operation and cleanliness.
  • Verify turn signals are functioning and amber in color.
  • Inspect clearance lights for operation and damage.
  • Ensure all reflectors are clean and not damaged.
  • Check windshield for cracks or damage in driver's line of sight.
  • Test windshield wipers for proper operation and blade condition.
  • Verify front bumper is secure and not damaged.
  • Ensure front license plate is clean, visible, and properly secured.

Driver Side Inspection

  • Test door operation - opens, closes, and latches properly.
  • Check driver's mirror for proper mounting and adjustment.
  • Inspect steps and grab handles for security and damage.
  • Examine fuel tank for leaks and secure mounting.
  • Verify fuel cap is present and seals properly.
  • Check DEF tank (if equipped) for leaks and secure mounting.
  • Inspect steer tire for proper tread depth (minimum 4/32").
  • Check drive tires for adequate tread depth (minimum 2/32").
  • Verify all lug nuts are present, tight, and not damaged.
  • Look for cuts, bulges, or sidewall damage on all tires.

Rear of Vehicle

  • Check tail lights for proper operation and visibility.
  • Test brake lights - should be bright and responsive.
  • Verify turn signals are operational.
  • Check reverse lights (if equipped) for proper function.
  • Inspect red reflectors for cleanliness and visibility.
  • Verify conspicuity tape is present and clean.
  • Test cargo doors for proper opening and closing.
  • Check door latches and locks for security.
  • Verify DOT bumper is present and properly secured.
  • Ensure rear license plate is clean and visible.

Passenger Side Inspection

  • Check door operation and latching mechanism.
  • Verify passenger mirror mounting and condition.
  • Inspect steps and grab handles for damage.
  • Examine exhaust system for leaks and secure mounting.
  • Check for excessive rust or damage on exhaust components.
  • Inspect steer tire condition and tread depth.
  • Check drive tires for wear and damage.
  • Verify all lug nuts are present and properly torqued.

Coupling Devices (If Applicable)

  • Check fifth wheel for proper lubrication.
  • Verify kingpin is properly engaged and locked.
  • Ensure no gap exists between upper and lower fifth wheel.
  • Inspect air lines for damage and secure connections.
  • Check electrical cables for damage and proper connection.
  • Verify glad hands are properly connected and sealed.
  • Test trailer brakes and lights after connection.

Cargo Securement

  • Verify cargo is properly distributed for weight balance.
  • Check all tie-downs and straps for damage or wear.
  • Ensure proper number of tie-downs for cargo weight.
  • Verify no cargo extends beyond legal limits.
  • Check tarps or covers are secure (if required).
  • Inspect for any loose items that could shift during transport.
  • Ensure all cargo doors can be properly secured.

Final Safety Checks

  • Verify emergency equipment is present (triangles, fire extinguisher).
  • Check all fluid levels are within operating range.
  • Look under vehicle for any leaks or damage.
  • Ensure all lights are clean and functioning.
  • Verify registration and permits are current.
  • Complete and sign Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
  • Report any defects found to maintenance department.
