Post-Trip Truck Inspection Checklist (DVIR)

Complete your Driver Vehicle Inspection Report to ensure DOT compliance and identify any defects that occurred during your trip.

⚠️ DOT Compliance Requirement

Federal regulations (49 CFR § 396.11) require drivers to prepare a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) at the completion of each day's work on each vehicle operated. This report must cover at least the following parts and accessories:

Pre-Inspection Preparation

  • Park vehicle on level ground in a safe location.
  • Set parking brake and turn off engine.
  • Remove keys from ignition.
  • Put on safety vest if inspecting in traffic areas.
  • Gather inspection form, pen, and flashlight if needed.
  • Note current odometer reading and location.

Exterior Walk-Around Inspection

  • Check body condition for new damage or loose parts.
  • Inspect all door latches and locks for security.
  • Verify mirrors are secure, clean, and properly adjusted.
  • Examine windshield and windows for cracks or damage.
  • Test all exterior lights - headlights, turn signals, brake lights, clearance lights.
  • Check reflectors and conspicuity tape for cleanliness and damage.
  • Inspect license plates for security and visibility.
  • Look under vehicle for fluid leaks or damage.

Tires and Wheels

  • Visually inspect all tires for cuts, bulges, or embedded objects.
  • Check tire pressure (if gauges available) or look for obvious under-inflation.
  • Verify adequate tread depth (4/32" on steer, 2/32" on others).
  • Ensure all lug nuts are present and appear tight.
  • Look for cracks or damage on wheels/rims.
  • Check that mud flaps are present and secure.
  • Inspect valve stems and caps.

Engine Compartment

  • Check engine oil level (with engine off).
  • Inspect coolant level in reservoir.
  • Verify power steering fluid level.
  • Check windshield washer fluid.
  • Look for any fluid leaks or spills.
  • Inspect belts for fraying or excessive wear.
  • Check hoses for cracks, leaks, or loose connections.
  • Verify battery connections are secure.

Cab Interior Inspection

  • Check all gauges and warning lights are functioning.
  • Test horn operation.
  • Verify windshield wipers and washers work properly.
  • Ensure all mirrors provide clear visibility.
  • Check seat belts for proper operation and damage.
  • Verify fire extinguisher is charged and properly mounted.
  • Confirm emergency triangles/flares are present.
  • Test all interior lights and switches.

Air Brake System Check

  • Check air pressure gauge shows normal operating range (90-120 psi).
  • Listen for excessive air leaks with engine off.
  • Test low air pressure warning device (should activate before 60 psi).
  • Verify spring brakes release properly.
  • Check that air lines are secure and not damaged.
  • Test brake pedal feel and travel.
  • Ensure glad hands are properly connected (if applicable).

Coupling System (If Applicable)

  • Inspect fifth wheel for proper lubrication.
  • Check that fifth wheel jaws are securely locked around kingpin.
  • Verify no space between upper and lower fifth wheel.
  • Ensure air lines and electrical cables are properly connected.
  • Check that landing gear is fully raised.
  • Inspect pintle hook or other coupling devices for security.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Complete all sections of the DVIR form.
  • List any defects found during inspection.
  • Note if vehicle is safe to operate or needs to be placed out of service.
  • Sign and date the inspection report.
  • Submit report to motor carrier within 24 hours.
  • Keep a copy of the report for your records.
  • Report any safety-critical defects immediately to dispatch/maintenance.

Critical Safety Items

  • Any brake system defect affecting stopping ability.
  • Steering mechanism defects.
  • Missing or non-functioning required lights.
  • Tires with less than legal tread depth.
  • Exhaust system leaking in cab area.
  • Windshield damage in driver's line of sight.
  • Any condition that would make vehicle unsafe to operate.
