Important Safety Notice

Federal regulations require commercial drivers to perform pre-trip inspections before operating any commercial motor vehicle. This free checklist helps ensure compliance with DOT regulations and promotes road safety.

In-Cab Inspection

  • Check fire extinguisher is present, charged, and properly mounted.
  • Verify three warning triangles or flares are available.
  • Ensure spare electrical fuses are present (if applicable).
  • Test seat belt for proper operation and security.
  • Sound horn to verify it's working properly.
  • Test windshield wipers and washer fluid operation.
  • Adjust all mirrors for proper visibility.
  • Check all gauges are functioning correctly.
  • Test heater and defroster operation.

Engine Compartment Check

  • Check engine oil level and condition.
  • Verify coolant level in reservoir (when engine is cold).
  • Inspect power steering fluid level.
  • Check windshield washer fluid reservoir.
  • Inspect belts for wear, cracks, or proper tension.
  • Check all hoses for leaks, cracks, or loose connections.
  • Look for any visible leaks under the engine.
  • Verify battery terminals are clean and tight.
  • Check air filter condition if accessible.

External Walk-Around - Lights & Reflectors

  • Test headlights on both low and high beam settings.
  • Check all turn signals (front, rear, and side markers).
  • Verify brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed.
  • Ensure tail lights are functioning.
  • Test four-way hazard flashers.
  • Inspect all reflectors for cleanliness and damage.
  • Check clearance lights and identification lights.
  • Verify license plate light is working.

Tires and Wheels Inspection

  • Check front tire tread depth (minimum 4/32").
  • Check rear tire tread depth (minimum 2/32").
  • Verify proper tire inflation using a gauge.
  • Inspect sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or damage.
  • Check valve stems and ensure caps are present.
  • Verify all lug nuts are present and properly tightened.
  • Inspect rims for cracks or damage.
  • Check hub oil seals for leaks.
  • Look for any objects lodged between dual tires.

Brake System Check

  • Test service brake pedal for firmness and travel.
  • Check for any brake fluid leaks.
  • Verify brake warning light functions properly.
  • Test parking brake holds vehicle stationary.
  • Ensure parking brake releases completely.
  • For air brakes: Check air pressure builds properly.
  • Test low air pressure warning device.
  • Verify air leakage is within acceptable limits.
  • Check brake adjustment on all wheels.

Steering System Inspection

  • Check steering wheel for excessive play (max 2" for 20" wheel).
  • Verify power steering fluid level and check for leaks.
  • Inspect steering linkage for worn or loose parts.
  • Check steering box for secure mounting and leaks.
  • Test steering wheel operation from lock to lock.
  • Ensure no binding or unusual noises when turning.

Suspension System Check

  • Inspect springs for broken leaves or shifted position.
  • Check spring mounts and hangers for damage.
  • Verify U-bolts are tight and secure.
  • Inspect shock absorbers for leaks and secure mounting.
  • Check air bags for proper inflation (if equipped).
  • Look for any cracked or broken suspension parts.

Coupling Devices (If Applicable)

  • Check fifth wheel is properly lubricated.
  • Verify no cracks or damage to fifth wheel plate.
  • Ensure jaws are properly locked around kingpin.
  • Check safety latch is engaged.
  • Verify air and electrical lines are properly connected.
  • Test glad hands for secure connection and no leaks.

Documentation Requirements

After completing this free pre-trip inspection, drivers must:

  • Complete a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)
  • Report any defects to maintenance immediately
  • Not operate the vehicle if any defect affects safety
  • Sign and date the inspection report
