CDL Testing Requirement

CDL applicants must be able to identify and explain each inspection item during the skills test. This checklist covers all required components for Class A, B, and C vehicles.

Section 1: Engine Compartment CDL Required

  • Check engine oil level with dipstick - should be between MIN and MAX marks.
  • Verify coolant level in sight glass or reservoir when engine is cool.
  • Inspect power steering fluid level at reservoir.
  • Check windshield washer fluid and top off if needed.
  • Examine all engine belts for proper tension (1/2 to 3/4 inch deflection).
  • Look for cracks, fraying, or excessive wear on belts.
  • Inspect all hoses for leaks, cracks, or soft spots.
  • Check for any fluid leaks on engine or ground beneath.
  • Verify air compressor is securely mounted (if belt-driven).

Section 2: Cab Area / Driver Compartment CDL Required

  • Ensure parking brake is set before starting engine.
  • Test all gauges - oil pressure, temperature, voltage, air pressure.
  • Verify warning lights come on during bulb check, then turn off.
  • Test horn operation (both electric and air if equipped).
  • Check steering wheel play - no more than 10 degrees (2 inches at rim).
  • Test windshield wipers and washers for proper operation.
  • Verify mirrors are properly adjusted and secure.
  • Check seat belt condition and proper latching.
  • Confirm fire extinguisher is charged, accessible, and properly rated.
  • Verify three reflective triangles are present and accessible.
  • Check for spare electrical fuses if vehicle uses them.

Section 3: External Lights & Reflectors CDL Required

  • Test headlights - both low beam and high beam operation.
  • Check left and right front turn signals.
  • Verify four-way hazard flashers work properly.
  • Inspect clearance lights on front, sides, and rear.
  • Test all side marker lights.
  • Check tail lights function properly.
  • Test brake lights - have assistant press pedal or use reflection.
  • Verify rear turn signals flash at proper rate.
  • Check license plate light illuminates plate.
  • Inspect all reflectors for damage or dirt.

Section 4: Steering System CDL Critical

  • Check steering box for leaks and secure mounting.
  • Inspect steering linkage for worn or loose parts.
  • Verify no missing nuts, bolts, or cotter pins.
  • Check power steering fluid level and look for leaks.
  • Test steering wheel for excessive free play.
  • Ensure steering column is securely mounted.

Section 5: Brake System CDL Critical

  • Test air brake system if equipped:
  • - Check air compressor drive belt condition and tension.
  • - Build air pressure to governor cutoff (120-140 psi).
  • - Test air leakage rate (3 psi/min single, 4 psi/min combination).
  • - Verify low air warning activates before 60 psi.
  • - Check spring brakes apply between 20-45 psi.
  • Inspect brake drums or discs for cracks or damage.
  • Check brake linings/pads for thickness (minimum 1/4 inch).
  • Look for broken or missing components.
  • Test parking brake holds vehicle on grade.
  • Check service brakes stop vehicle smoothly.

Section 6: Wheels & Tires CDL Critical

  • Steering axle tires - minimum 4/32" tread depth.
  • All other tires - minimum 2/32" tread depth.
  • Check tire inflation with gauge - match manufacturer specs.
  • Look for cuts, bulges, tread separation, or sidewall damage.
  • Verify valve stems are not damaged or leaking.
  • Ensure dual tires are not touching each other.
  • Check that all lug nuts are present and tight.
  • Look for rust trails indicating loose lug nuts.
  • Inspect rims for cracks, bends, or illegal welding repairs.
  • Verify no regrooved tires on steering axle.

Section 7: Fuel System

  • Check fuel tank(s) are securely mounted.
  • Verify fuel caps are on tight and seal properly.
  • Look for leaks from tank, lines, or connections.
  • Ensure crossover lines are secure (dual tanks).

Section 8: Coupling System CDL Required

  • Check fifth wheel/coupling:
  • - No gaps between upper and lower fifth wheel.
  • - Locking jaws closed around kingpin.
  • - Release arm properly secured.
  • - Safety latch engaged (if equipped).
  • - Platform properly greased.
  • Air and electrical connections:
  • - Air lines properly connected to glad hands.
  • - No air leaks at connections.
  • - Electrical cord firmly plugged in and secured.
  • - Air lines and electrical cord have enough slack for turns.
  • Verify landing gear is fully raised and handle secured.

Final Steps: Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
  • Document all defects found during inspection.
  • Report defects to maintenance department immediately.
  • Do not operate vehicle if any critical defects are found.
  • Sign and date the inspection report.
  • Keep copy of report as required by FMCSA regulations.
  • Verify all required documents are on board (registration, insurance, permits).
  • Confirm CDL, medical certificate, and endorsements are current.
