  • Engine & Front3 minutes
  • Driver Side Walk2.5 minutes
  • Rear Check2 minutes
  • Passenger Side Walk2.5 minutes
  • Coupling & Brake Test3 minutes
  • Total Time15 minutes

Step 1: In-Cab Quick Check 2 minutes

Time-Saver: Start the engine immediately to allow air pressure to build while performing other checks.
  • Enter cab and start engine - let it idle to build air pressure.
  • Quick scan of all gauges - ensure no warning lights remain on.
  • Test horn with two quick beeps.
  • Check windshield for cracks in the wiper sweep area.
  • Test wipers and washers - one quick spray and wipe.
  • Adjust all mirrors if needed - should take 10 seconds.
  • Verify emergency equipment: fire extinguisher (charged), triangles (3), spare fuses.

Step 2: Engine & Front 3 minutes

  • Pop hood and secure with prop rod.
  • Quick oil check - should be between MIN and MAX marks.
  • Visual coolant level check in reservoir (don't open radiator cap).
  • Look under truck for any puddles or active leaks.
  • Quick belt tension check - press with thumb, should deflect about 1/2 inch.
  • Test all front lights: headlights (low/high), turn signals, four-ways.
  • Check steer tires: look for 4/32" tread depth and proper inflation (visual check).

Step 3: Driver Side Walk 2.5 minutes

Efficiency Tip: Walk at a steady pace, use a flashlight to quickly spot issues.
  • Fuel tank secure - wiggle cap to ensure it's tight.
  • Check all driver side tires in one smooth walk - look for obvious defects.
  • Verify minimum 2/32" tread on drive tires (penny test if uncertain).
  • Quick visual of all lug nuts - look for rust streaks indicating looseness.
  • Side marker lights and reflectors - should be clean and intact.
  • No dragging parts or loose components visible.

Step 4: Rear Check 2 minutes

  • Have a spotter or use a reflective surface to check all rear lights quickly.
  • Tail lights, brake lights, turn signals - test all at once if possible.
  • License plate clean and light functioning.
  • Cargo doors secure - give a firm tug on handles.
  • Check that reflective tape/conspicuity tape is intact.
  • Quick look for any cargo shifting or securement issues.

Step 5: Passenger Side Walk 2.5 minutes

  • Exhaust system check - look for secure mounting and no holes.
  • All passenger side tires - same quick visual as driver side.
  • Wheels and lug nuts - no cracks or missing hardware.
  • Check frame and cross members visible from this side.
  • Side markers and reflectors intact.
  • Return to cab for final brake tests.

Step 6: Coupling & Brake Test 3 minutes

Critical Step: Never skip brake tests - they're required by DOT and essential for safety.
  • If coupled: Check fifth wheel has no gap, kingpin is locked.
  • Air lines and electrical cord connected properly, no damage.
  • Landing gear fully raised and handle secured.
  • Check air pressure gauge - should be 120-140 psi by now.
  • Turn off engine, release parking brake, hold service brake - check air loss (max 3 psi/minute).
  • Fan brakes to test low air warning at 60 psi.
  • Continue fanning - spring brakes should apply between 20-45 psi.
  • Restart engine, build air, test parking brake holds vehicle.

Final Steps: Documentation

  • Complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
  • Note any defects found during inspection.
  • If defects found: Tag vehicle out of service, report to maintenance.
  • If no defects: Sign DVIR certifying vehicle is safe for operation.
  • Keep copy of inspection report as required by FMCSA.
