Objective
This pre-use crane inspection procedure helps identify mechanical defects, control issues, and environmental hazards prior to operating lifting equipment. Regular inspections are mandated by OSHA (29 CFR 1926.1412) for safe crane operations.
Step-by-Step Crane Inspection
1. Operator's Cab and Controls
- Ensure mirrors and windshield are clean and undamaged
- Test horn, lights, backup alarm, and wipers
- Verify readable load charts and decals are in place
- Inspect seat belts and control responsiveness
2. Electrical System
- Check wiring insulation, switch function, and battery voltage
- Inspect emergency stop switches and ground fault protection
3. Hydraulic and Mechanical Components
- Inspect hoses, lines, and cylinders for leaks or wear
- Check outriggers, boom, and hoist mechanisms
- Verify free movement and lubrication of parts
4. Hooks, Wire Ropes, and Rigging
- Inspect hooks for cracks, deformation, and latch condition
- Check wire rope for kinks, birdcaging, and wear
- Ensure shackles, slings, and chains are certified and intact
5. Environmental and Ground Conditions
- Check setup area for stability and soft ground
- Ensure weather, wind, and lighting are suitable for operation
Post-Inspection Action
- Record all findings in the inspection form or eDVIR system
- Report any unsafe condition immediately to supervisor
- Tag out crane if critical defects are identified
- Ensure inspection is signed off before operation
