Inspection Objective
This procedure ensures school buses are thoroughly inspected before departure each day, verifying their mechanical integrity and readiness to safely transport students. The inspection should be completed by certified personnel or the assigned driver before any route begins.
Exterior Inspection
- Check for fluid leaks under the bus
- Inspect tires for inflation, tread depth, and visible damage
- Verify mirrors, reflectors, and lights (headlights, taillights, flashers)
- Test stop arm and crossing arm operation
- Inspect undercarriage and frame for rust or damage
Interior Checks
- Ensure handrails, seats, flooring, and emergency exits are intact and operable
- Test heater, defroster, and cabin lighting
- Check mirror adjustments and driver visibility
- Verify seat belt function where applicable
- Confirm cleanliness and absence of obstructions
Control Panel & Gauges
- Check fuel level, air pressure, oil pressure, and voltmeter readings
- Test warning lights, alarms, horn, and indicator lights
- Confirm operational ignition start and dashboard visibility
Brake & Safety Systems
- Test parking brake and service brake for hold and response
- Inspect air brake system (if applicable) for leaks and PSI recovery
- Verify ABS light and indicator reset correctly
- Check emergency equipment (fire extinguisher, triangles, first aid)
Documentation
- Log inspection results in the DVIR (Daily Vehicle Inspection Report)
- Report and address any critical defects before operating
- Retain inspection record for audit and compliance logs
