Purpose
This procedure outlines systematic steps for drivers to inspect their commercial vehicles before starting their routes. It supports compliance with FMCSA regulations 49 CFR 392.7 and 396.13 and helps identify mechanical issues early.
Inspection Steps
Engine Bay Checks
- Check engine oil and coolant levels
- Inspect belts, hoses, and battery terminals
- Verify windshield washer fluid and power steering fluid
Cabin and Control Panel
- Test seat belts, horn, dashboard lights, and gauges
- Inspect mirrors and windshield visibility
- Verify heater, defroster, and wiper operation
Brake and Air Systems
- Conduct air pressure build-up and leak rate tests
- Test spring brake and parking brake engagement
- Check service brakes under load (if possible)
Tires and Wheels
- Check tire pressure and tread depth
- Inspect rims, lug nuts, and valve stems
- Ensure dual tires have adequate spacing
Exterior Lights and Reflectors
- Test all lights: headlights, turn signals, brake lights
- Verify reflectors and reflective tape condition
- Ensure license plate and reverse lights are working
Trailer and Coupling Devices
- Check fifth wheel coupling and lubrication
- Inspect kingpin, air lines, and electrical connections
- Verify load security and landing gear status
Safety Equipment
- Verify presence of fire extinguisher and warning triangles
- Ensure availability of fuses, safety vest, and ELD device
Certification
Upon completion of the inspection, the driver must sign the certification that the vehicle is either in safe condition or any defects have been addressed or noted for correction. Records must be retained as per FMCSA requirements.
