Scope of Inspection
This procedure is designed for certified fleet mechanics to follow a standardized multi-system vehicle inspection, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance (FMCSA/DOT), and operational reliability across light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles.
Core Inspection Segments
- Drivetrain: Check engine oil, coolant, belts, hoses, air filter, exhaust, and mounts.
- Brakes: Measure brake pads/shoes, inspect rotors/drums, test ABS and parking brake function.
- Steering/Suspension: Inspect shocks, springs, linkage, joints, airbags, and alignment.
- Tires/Wheels: Tread depth, inflation pressure, valve integrity, rim condition, and spare.
- Electrical: Test battery, alternator, lights, wiring, horn, and warning indicators.
- Fluid Levels: Confirm all system levels (engine, transmission, brake, coolant, DEF, etc.).
- Safety Gear: Inspect seatbelts, airbags, fire extinguisher, reflectors, mirrors, and windshield.
- Exterior/Frame: Check body panels, bumpers, doors, glass, fuel tank, fifth wheel, and ID plates.
Additional Specialty Checks
- Diagnostics: Run OBD/electronic scan, verify fault codes and module communication
- Fluid Analysis: Collect fluid samples to assess contamination and wear trends
- Brake Testing: Perform stopping distance tests and brake fade simulations
- Battery/Charging: Load test, output verification, and voltage drop analysis
Documentation & Records
- Log inspection results for each vehicle and assign defect levels
- Capture technician signature and inspection date
- Track maintenance history and repeat fault indicators
- Attach photos or OBD reports for documentation (if applicable)
