Critical Inspection Procedures
Follow these detailed procedures for key inspection areas. Adapt these steps to your specific truck and trailer configuration.
Air Brake Test Procedure
- Start engine and build air pressure to governed cut-out (120-135 psi)
- Turn off engine, release parking brake, apply foot brake
- Hold for 1 minute and check for pressure drop (should be less than 2 psi)
- Continue holding and monitor for additional 4 minutes (drop should be less than 3 psi)
- Restart engine and check low air warning system (should activate at 55-60 psi)
- Continue reducing pressure to verify spring brakes activate (around 20-40 psi)
Fifth Wheel Coupling Inspection
- Check fifth wheel mounting bolts for tightness and integrity
- Verify jaws are properly closed around kingpin
- Ensure release handle is in locked position
- Check for proper lubrication on fifth wheel plate
- Verify no gap exists between trailer apron and fifth wheel
- Conduct tug test by gently pulling forward with trailer brakes applied
Trailer Light Connection Test
- Connect electrical cord and verify secure connection
- Turn on headlights and verify marker lights
- Activate left turn signal and verify function front and rear
- Activate right turn signal and verify function front and rear
- Apply brakes and verify brake lights function
- Test 4-way flashers and verify all turn signals flash
Tire Inspection Method
- Check tire pressure with gauge when cold
- Measure tread depth at three points across the tire
- Inspect sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or signs of damage
- Look for uneven wear patterns that might indicate alignment issues
- Check for debris between dual tires
- Verify valve stems have caps and are not damaged
Preventive Maintenance Schedule
Follow this recommended maintenance schedule to keep your truck and trailer in optimal condition. Regular preventive maintenance helps avoid costly repairs and extends equipment life.
