Inspection Scope
DOT annual inspections are required for all commercial motor vehicles operating in the U.S. per 49 CFR §396.17. The inspection must be conducted by a qualified inspector and documented in compliance with Appendix G.
Inspection Categories
- Brake System: Inspect service, parking, and emergency brake performance, including lining thickness and air pressure retention.
- Steering System: Check for free play, linkage integrity, and proper function of all components.
- Lights and Electrical: Verify all exterior and interior lights, signals, horn, and wiring integrity.
- Tires and Wheels: Confirm tread depth, sidewall integrity, rim damage, and lug nut tightness.
- Windshield and Wipers: Ensure visibility, crack-free glass, and operational wiper system.
- Suspension: Examine springs, shocks, U-bolts, and axle positioning.
- Frame and Body: Identify cracks, rust, or frame member damage.
- Exhaust and Fuel System: Look for leaks, secure mounting, and emissions integrity.
- Coupling Devices: Inspect fifth wheel, pintle hooks, kingpin, and mounting hardware.
- Emergency Equipment: Verify fire extinguisher, reflectors, and warning devices.
Inspector Certification Requirements
- Inspector must meet qualifications outlined in §396.19
- Training documentation and experience records must be maintained
- Inspector must certify that all applicable components meet Appendix G standards
Documentation and Recordkeeping
- Complete inspection form with inspector name, date, and vehicle identifiers
- Maintain records for at least 14 months at the place of business
- Apply inspection sticker showing inspection month/year and facility info
- Photograph sticker and retain digitally where applicable

Proper documentation of inspections, defects, and repairs protects against FMCSA violations and ensures safety across fleet operations. All inspections must be completed using approved inspection checklists reflecting the Appendix G minimum standards.
